Frequently Asked Questions

How do I plan an RV trip with WhimTrav?

Open the WhimTrav app and tap "Plan a Trip." Enter your start and destination and your RV’s height, width, length and weight. WhimTrav plans a route around the restrictions in its routing data and shows campgrounds, dump stations and fuel stops along the way. Always follow posted signs; no map data is complete.

Where can I dump my RV tanks?

Turn on the "Dump Stations" layer on this map, or browse the dump stations by state page. Every station shows its source; details such as hours, fees and access are shown only when the source lists them, and some places are marked as likely rather than confirmed. Call ahead when it matters. See also RV dump stations by state.

What is boondocking and how do I find free camping?

Boondocking (also called dry camping or dispersed camping) is camping without hookups, often on public lands for free. The "Show BLM Land" overlay on this map shows where Bureau of Land Management land is. Land ownership alone does not mean camping is allowed: check the local BLM or Forest Service office for closures, stay limits, fire rules and fees before you go. Going off-grid? Browse solar panels and portable power in our gear guide.

How do I find routes that avoid low bridges for my RV?

Enter your RV’s height, width, length and weight in the WhimTrav app. Routes are planned with HERE truck routing around the low clearances and weight limits in its data, and you get a warning when a known restriction could not be avoided. Data can be missing or out of date, so posted clearances and your own measured height always come first. Work out your travel height with the RV height & clearance checker.

Is WhimTrav free to use?

Yes. This map and the other web tools are free with no account. The app is free to download; paid plans add more RV navigation trips, AI trip plans and saved trips.

Can I contribute campground information to WhimTrav?

Yes. Sign in and use the "Add Place" button on the map to submit a campground, dump station or other RV stop, or confirm an existing one. Submissions are kept separate from the public agency and OpenStreetMap data and show as pending until they are verified.
